DCI Anna Travis reluctantly investigates the disappearance of Alan Rawlins after his father reports him missing. Alan's girlfriend appears strangely calm, but traces of blood in the couple's flat suggest that a serious crime has been concealed. Without a body, Anna must first prove that murder occurred before she can identify the killer. Financial records, relationships and carefully staged evidence lead her through a case in which the victim's identity may be less certain than it seems.
