Xiaomei Martell recalls growing up in Inner Mongolia during China’s Cultural Revolution. The youngest of four daughters, she is raised in a family with little money but a strong belief in education, family and food. After her father’s death, daily life becomes harder, yet relatives, school and memorable dishes remain central to her childhood. Her story follows the changes in China as she eventually wins a university place and begins a new life in Beijing.
