Andrei Gromyko recalls more than five decades at the centre of Soviet diplomacy and politics. He describes his rise from a rural Belarusian childhood to ambassador in Washington, foreign minister and senior Kremlin statesman, and reflects on negotiations and encounters with major world leaders. The memoir provides his view of Soviet foreign policy, the Cold War, wartime diplomacy and the internal political world he served from Stalin through Gorbachev.
