Six months pregnant, Jane Logan leaves Glasgow to join her long-term partner, Petra, in a fashionable Berlin apartment. Petra's banking career keeps her away, leaving Jane isolated in an unfamiliar city and increasingly uneasy about the building. She hears arguments through the walls, notices lights and movement in a neglected backhouse and becomes concerned about Anna, the teenage daughter of their neighbour, Dr Alban Mann. When Jane suspects that Anna may be in danger, Petra and the police question whether pregnancy, loneliness and Jane's troubled past are distorting her judgement. Refusing to dismiss what she has seen and heard, Jane begins investigating for herself. Her obsession draws her into the secrets of the building, where fear, unreliable perceptions and hidden violence lead toward devastating consequences.
