Harold Fry is a quiet, recently retired man living in Devon with his wife, Maureen, when a letter arrives from Queenie Hennessy, a former colleague who is dying in a hospice in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Harold walks to the postbox to send a brief reply, but an unexpected conversation convinces him that Queenie will remain alive as long as he keeps walking. Wearing ordinary clothes and unsuitable shoes, he sets off across England without a map or plan. Along the way, strangers share their stories and Harold is forced to revisit his own regrets, his damaged marriage and the painful distance between him and his son, David. What begins as an impulsive act becomes a journey of endurance, memory and hope, as Harold discovers that moving forward may be the only way to face the past.
